This is one of the best Brother John technical analysis presentations I’ve seen to-date. People new to the concepts should be able to follow along as well. He explains things perfectly.
In my 25 years as an active investor, I’ve found that only about 10% of the people that use TA really understand it well enough and feel it in their bones (the rhythm of the market, as Jim Sinclair says) to be able to consistently make good calls. Brother John is among that ten percent. One of the things that usually make for the very best technical analysis analysts is their embrace of a holistic approach to data. When someone is able to fully understand the entire big picture of fundamentals AND technical analysis, more often than not that person rocks when it comes to the quality of their TA. Basically, it boils down to a simple axiom: the more one knows and uses, the more one is able to better “connect the dots” and make accurate forecasts.
I think TA has seen it’s day. If the world was millions of independent investors acting independently, then TA makes sense. However, today’s DOW or NASDAQ is just computer algos trading back and forth. Re silver and gold – fundamental analysis will ultimately carry the day, so if your plan is to buy phyzz and hold on you are set. ”Be right and sit tight”…Jesse Liverpool.
I hear you and largely agree. But TA still is very useful when trying to get a feel for bottoms and tops. I only use it for about 10% of the time I spend in my work. But when I see the signals on sentiment and momentum, for example, matching up with all the qualitative information I’ll look at, it really does add more meat to the bones of TA. That’s why I’ve come to the conclusion that the best TA analysts and investors are the ones that use it within the context of a bigger picture.
As a chart neophyte this explained a lot. Very useful. Morgans run $27-29 on auction for me usually. Flip them on eBay if I get nice ones for a profit to buy 90% dimes or quarters at spot.
